ART AFTER SCHOOL : "THE SNOWY DAY"

In February we created collages inspired by Ezra Jack Keats classic story "The Snowy Day".
Check out the be-autiful collages we made at Art After School this session and see how we did it!

PROJECT LEARNING : Collage. Colour Schemes. Tinting. Perspectives. Ezra Jack Keats

THE MATERIALS
Tempra/ Gouache paints and lots of clean water
Kraft Paper
Precut Paper Squares, Rectangles and Shapes
Brushes
Scissors
Pencils, Erasers, Rulers
Skinny Markers, Chalk Pastels (Sketches)

1. EXPLORING THE BOOK : Pater's Snowy Day. Peter's Environment. Collage! When was this book written? Was Peter a real person? Who was Ezra Jack Keats?

2. SKETCHING A SCENE : Our Fave Part of the Story and Perspectives
We talked about the pictures we liked in the story and our favourite parts. We noticed elements in the pictures and learned how to draw them. Were is everything? Where is Peter? How far away is Peter? We practiced drawing Peter's snowsuit. We paid attention to the colours Ezra Jack Keats used.

3. PREP : Painting and Cutting Paper
We looked at the palette Ezra Jack Keats used noticed his use of solid and gradient colours and how he created texture in his collage compositions. We experimented with using white to tint colours and paint sheets of paper for our Snowy Day Collages. We thought about the picture we would like to create. We began cutting out our individual buildings, snowdrifts and other elements we wanted to include in our individual collages.

4. COLLAGE : Assembling, Cutting and Gluing
Class 2 our paper was all dry and we were ready to start assembling our compositions. We considered the perspective- where Peter would appear in our picture and how big he would be. Many artists glued buildings as the back layer and snow' drifts in the forground. We added colour to our snow like EJK and included details in our pictures like snow on rooftops, footprints in the snow and snowflakes. We used red paper for Pater's snowsuit and we thought about how his body would be turned and how we would draw it. We glued down all the parts of our collages with glue sticks.

THE FINISHED ART : Is wonderful! Most artists finished their collages over 2 classes.

"One winter morning Peter woke up
and looked out the window. Snow
had fallen during the night
It covered everything as far as he could see"
